October almost over, Ludum Dare challenge failed
Well, in my last post I mentioned that I was planning to port a little flash prototype game that I made for a game competition to the iPhone for the Ludum Dare October Challenge. Well, I have decided that the game wasn’t going to be fun on the phone, so I failed the LD challenge. The good news is that in the process I learned quite a bit about the Sparrow Framework, and I learned some new tricks for making graphics in Blender and rendering them to 2D.
However, and a big however, I did think of a game I think will be really fun on the phone. My goal is to have a somewhat working prototype by Sunday night. I’ll try to post some progress here over the weekend.
I’ve been working on my entry for the Dare 2 Dream 2011.2 game jam. The theme is Black and White, so I’m making a game where the player can only touch blocks that match their color, and they can flip colors while jumping. I’m making the game in Flash using Flixel, but my hope is to port it to the iPhone for the Ludum Dare October Challenge. Wish me luck!
I’m continuing work on my lighting code for my voxel engine. I think the smooth lighting looks really nice, and I’ve improved performance greatly. Just a few more kinks to work out and I can move on.
I finally finished up the dynamic lighting for my voxel engine. I still need to improve performance, but that’s for another day. Gotta enjoy the small victories.
Here is the latest and greatest in my voxel engine (soon to be actual game). In this video, I’m playing around with a sticky bomb launcher in my test world. I’ll make another video of the rocket launcher when I have a few minutes. Hopefully over the next couple weeks I’ll be able to integrate some basic enemies and turn this into a super fun game.
I’m slowly making progress on my voxel engine, and I’m at the point where I am starting to make a game with it. This video shows one of my test levels being destroyed by a pretty powerful gun. This is all very much a work in progress still, but the ideas are starting to come together which is really awesome.
If you still haven’t tried Run Run Robot yet then watch this video. Then go play it.

Basic gist is that you are a lovable robot that has to escape from an evil octopus and his minions. Kill them before they kill you.
Also, Jedi mode is pretty awesome.
Myself, Ty (tyrus.tumblr.com), and a buddy of ours named Eric), are making an entry for the Ludum Dare 21 Jam. So far we’re making good progress. The screenshot here shows our little robot player running around the world. We will soon have a monster that he is running from, and stuff for him to shoot at.
